Join us in Tampa, Florida at the The Hotel Flor for a 2.5 Day CPTED Work Shop . The NICP’s CPTED Applied Workshop is a unique, small group learning experience designed and led by Art Hushen, Founder of NICP. Held in Tampa, Florida, home to nationally recognized CPTED projects, the workshop blends classroom instruction, peer collaboration, field based learning, and hands on practice.

Workshops are limited to 20 participants to ensure a highly interactive format. Each participant leaves with practical tools, strategies, and materials they can immediately apply in their community.

Attendance also qualifies for 16 hours of Continuing Education Credits, fulfilling the renewal requirement for NICP’s CPTED Professional Designation (CPD).

Art Hushen is the President/Owner of the National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP, Inc.), a global training and consulting company specializing in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. (CPTED) The NICP maintains the nationally recognized CPTED Professional Designation (CPD) Program.

Prior to the creation of NICP, Inc., Art was assigned to the Tampa Police Department’s Special Operations Bureau / CPTED Section where he was instrumental in the creation of the Department’s CPTED Unit and Tampa’s first CPTED Ordinance for the Westshore Business District, which is the largest Business District in Florida. He implemented the CPTED review process for the Tampa Parks Department Greenways and Trails Master Plan. He worked with the Tampa Housing Authority on their Hope VI program and was part of the task force implementing design guidelines.

Course Agenda

Day 1

  • 8:00 AM – 11:45 AM: Selected CPTED topics presented by Art Hushen

  • Lunch at The Dan (Hotel Flor restaurant)

  • 1:15 PM – 5:00 PM: Roundtable discussion of participant projects with feedback from Art and peers

Day 2

  • 12:00 PM: Shuttle departs for lunch at Ulele (Tampa Riverwalk)

  • Afternoon: Guided CPTED walking tour of Tampa’s Riverwalk and waterfront parks

  • Evening: Shuttle + trolley to historic Ybor City

  • Group dinner at Columbia Restaurant (prearranged menu)

  • After dinner: Hands-on Lighting Survey Activity using ExTech NIST-certified light meters

Day 3

  • 8:00 AM: Review of lighting survey results and discussion of advanced lighting technologies & standards

  • Final Session (2 hours): Wrap-up activity, discussion, or additional roundtable (may include region-specific CPTED & lighting standards)

  • Workshop concludes by 12:00 PM

What should I bring?

A padfolio and field guide are provided, but participants may bring personal notes or materials related to their projects. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the Riverwalk and Ybor City activities.

What is the dress code for the training?

The dress code is business casual. Jeans and flip flops are not permitted.

Will food be available at the training?

Yes. Your workshop registration includes meals and refreshments throughout the program:

  • Each morning: Coffee and light breakfast items will be provided.

  • Day 1: Lunch at The Dan (Hotel Flor’s restaurant).

  • Day 2: Lunch at Ulele on Tampa’s Riverwalk, plus a group dinner at the historic Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City.

  • Day 3: Light breakfast and morning refreshments before the final session.

What airport should I fly into?

We recommend flying into Tampa International Airport (TPA), the closest major airport to the training venue.

For those staying at Hotel Flor, the hotel is located approximately 8 miles from TPA, with a typical travel time of 15 to 20 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

This location is also easily accessible for local attendees commuting from surrounding areas.
