Join us in Greenville, South Carolina, for a 5-Day (40-Hour) Basic Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Course, hosted at the NEXT Innovation Center. This in-person training offers a comprehensive, hands-on approach to CPTED principles and practices in one of the Southeast’s most dynamic and growing cities.

CPTED strategies are ideal for law enforcement officers, architects, city/urban/park planners, city managers, city council members, landscape architects, security consultants, educators, or anyone involved in designing neighborhoods, schools, downtowns, buildings, or revitalization efforts. It’s a proven and effective method for fighting crime while promoting safety, community well-being, and economic growth.

Art Hushen is the President/Owner of the National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP, Inc.), a global training and consulting company specializing in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. (CPTED) The NICP maintains the nationally recognized CPTED Professional Designation (CPD) Program.

Prior to the creation of NICP, Inc., Art was assigned to the Tampa Police Department’s Special Operations Bureau / CPTED Section where he was instrumental in the creation of the Department’s CPTED Unit and Tampa’s first CPTED Ordinance for the Westshore Business District, which is the largest Business District in Florida. He implemented the CPTED review process for the Tampa Parks Department Greenways and Trails Master Plan. He worked with the Tampa Housing Authority on their Hope VI program and was part of the task force implementing design guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Time Do the Courses End on The Last Day of Training?

The courses are scheduled until 5:00pm. On the last day of both the Basic & Advanced CPTED courses participants complete an exam and a graded presentation. Remaining for all of the group presentations is a requirement for completing CPTED Training. The presentations include a variety of locations and issues that are presented and discussed as part of the curriculum.

What should I wear?

Business casual dress is expected. 

What Should I Bring to the Basic CPTED Course?

Remember to bring your laptop and a smart phone for the CPTED field assessment and presentation on Thursday and Friday.

Where is the course located?

The class will be held at the NEXT Innovation Center, located at:

Is parking available at the training location?

Yes! Free parking is available on-site at the training center. In the rare event of overflow, there is additional parking nearby at a local high school football stadium, which is almost always empty. To date, we’ve never seen the main lot completely full.

Where can I find nearby hotels?

You can view a map of hotels near the training center here on Google Maps. The area offers a variety of lodging options within a short drive or walk of the training site.

What can I do in Greenville during my stay?

Greenville is full of great dining, shopping, and attractions! Check out VisitGreenville.com for recommendations on restaurants, things to do, and places to stay while you’re in town.

Can I Leave Early on Friday?

No, Friday includes group presentations of the CPTED Field Assessments. Remaining for all the group presentations is a requirement for completing the 40 Hours of Basic CPTED Training. The presentations include a variety of locations and issues that are presented and discussed as part of the curriculum. So please do not ask to have your group present first, so that you can leave early. All certificates will be issued digitally by email.

Is there food provided?

Food is not provided however we give a 90 minute break at lunch to give students enough time eat and to travel to and from the event location.
