The National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP) is proud to introduce its newest CPTED Specialized Topics course, CPTED for Libraries. This 16 hour training that brings the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) into one of the most community driven and publicly accessible institutions, the library.
For generations, libraries have served as open, inclusive places for learning, collaboration, and connection. Yet those same strengths can also make them vulnerable to unique safety concerns. The CPTED for Libraries course was created to meet those challenges directly, offering practical tools and design based strategies that protect both people and purpose without compromising accessibility.
Introducing Instructor Tad Twidwell
The course is led by Tad Twidwell, whose rare combination of experience in both law enforcement and library management gives him a distinctive, real world perspective on safety design. Over the past 22 years, Tad has spent a decade in public safety and another twelve years in library leadership, a career path that has shaped his understanding of how design and daily operations intersect.
Today, Tad works in the field of physical security for libraries, where he manages integrated safety systems and conducts site and security assessments across a variety of public facilities. His approach emphasizes balance, protecting people while preserving the welcoming character that defines public libraries.
In his recent post, Why CPTED Works in Libraries, Tad explains that CPTED is not about restricting access or adding barriers. It is about subtle, thoughtful adjustments, improving lighting, sightlines, and staff visibility, while fostering trust and accessibility. From updated layouts and redefined staff roles to stronger partnerships with local agencies, CPTED provides a practical roadmap for libraries that want to stay open, safe, and inclusive.
Inside the Course: Real World Learning for Real World Libraries
CPTED for Libraries blends the proven structure of NICP’s core CPTED curriculum with targeted, library specific examples and case studies. Participants gain hands on insight into design, operations, and policy applications tailored to the realities of modern library work.
Key learning areas include:
-
Vulnerabilities and Threats Faced by Libraries, Past and Present
Examining how design and daily operations influence safety outcomes. -
Primary and Secondary CPTED Concepts for Libraries
Applying CPTED’s core principles to access control, visibility, and maintenance. -
Designing for CPTED: Interior and Exterior Strategies
Exploring lighting, ingress and egress, and layout design. -
Community Engagement and Partnerships
Strengthening collaboration with staff, volunteers, and social service partners. -
Conducting a CPTED Survey for Libraries
Assessing and documenting findings with practical, real world outcomes.
Each module builds on the one before it, with applied learning, discussion, and a final assessment that reinforces key concepts. Participants must achieve a minimum score of 80 percent on the final exam to complete the program.
Why CPTED for Libraries Matters
Libraries are more than places that house books, they are living, breathing community spaces. When designed with intention, they invite learning, interaction, and trust. When overlooked, small design flaws can create opportunities for disorder or risk.
CPTED helps find that balance. The CPTED for Libraries course equips participants with a framework for making evidence based improvements that protect staff and patrons while staying true to the library’s mission of accessibility and inclusion.
Earn CPD Renewal Credit
Graduates of CPTED for Libraries can apply the course toward renewal of the CPTED Professional Designation (CPD), keeping their credentials current while continuing to advance their expertise in CPTED.
A Step Forward in Specialized CPTED Training
With the addition of CPTED for Libraries, NICP continues to expand its lineup of specialized training opportunities that apply CPTED principles across diverse settings. This course marks an important step forward for library professionals, city planners, and public safety leaders working to preserve both the accessibility and safety of these vital community spaces.
