What is a CPTED Certification?
By Art Hushen – Founder & Lead Instructor
I’m often asked, “What is a CPTED certification?” Along with that come other common questions:
“I see ‘CPTED’ after someone’s name—are they certified?”
“If I take this course or that one, does it mean I’m certified?”
“Do I have to maintain the certification or am I certified forever?”
“Which is better—a 16-hour course, a 24-hour course, or a CPTED-for-security course?”
“What is the best CPTED course to take?”
“Can I claim I’m certified if there’s no exam or maintenance requirements?”
These are excellent questions—and important ones.
What CPTED Certification Means
CPTED, or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, certification is a professional credential that signifies an individual’s expertise in using environmental design to reduce crime and enhance safety.
It demonstrates proficiency in designing and improving physical environments to reduce crime opportunities and support positive social interaction, enhancing security through thoughtful planning of built and natural spaces, and applying CPTED principles in practical, real-world scenarios.
Key Characteristics of CPTED Certification
Environmental Focus: CPTED centers on using the physical environment—buildings, landscaping, lighting, and public spaces—to promote positive social interaction and deter criminal activity.
Proactive Approach: It emphasizes preventing crime by addressing its root causes, such as environmental design flaws, rather than reacting to incidents after they occur.
Multi-Disciplinary: CPTED is applied by professionals in law enforcement, urban planning, architecture, landscape design, security professionals, community development, and more.
Theory and Practice: Certification programs combine classroom instruction with hands-on training in areas like site assessments, design recommendations, report writing, and presentations.
Ongoing Professional Standards
Every professional field I’ve worked with, whether law enforcement, urban design, architecture, or the security industry shares one clear expectation: certification must be maintained.
Whether through Continuing Education Units (CEUs), Certification Maintenance (CM), POST credits, or Professional Development Hours (PDHs), the principle is the same: professional growth is not optional, it’s essential.
These requirements uphold credibility, integrity, and public trust in the profession. Ongoing education ensures that CPTED practitioners stay informed, competent, and aligned with evolving laws, standards, and best practices.
How to Earn CPTED Certification
Example: NICP’s CPTED Professional Designation
To earn the CPTED Professional Designation from the National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP), participants must complete 64 hours of instruction within two consecutive years, offered exclusively through the NICP.
The 40-hour Basic CPTED Course covers the core principles of environmental design, including site assessments, lighting, zoning, behavioral management, design charrettes, report writing, plan review, and presentation skills.
The 24-hour Advanced CPTED Course focuses on specialized areas like parks, public art, counter-terrorism strategies, placemaking, color and human behavior, and advanced site plan reviews.
Note: CPTED training from other providers does not count toward the NICP credential. Once the 64 hours of training is completed, you can now identify you earned the NICP CPTED Professional Designation by placing CPD after your name.
Maintaining the Certification
To keep the NICP CPTED Professional Designation active, professionals must either successfully complete a 16-hour CPTED Update course (offered by NICP), either online or in person, or attend the annual US CPTED Association (USCA) Conference.
Completing either option will renew the designation for four years from the date of completion.
As with any professional certification, failure to complete required hours will result in expiration of the credential.
