Art Hushen is the President/Owner of the National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP, Inc.), a global training and consulting company specializing in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. (CPTED) The NICP maintains the nationally recognized CPTED Professional Designation (CPD) Program.
Prior to the creation of NICP, Inc., Art was assigned to the Tampa Police Department’s Special Operations Bureau / CPTED Section where he was instrumental in the creation of the Department’s CPTED Unit and Tampa’s first CPTED Ordinance for the Westshore Business District, which is the largest Business District in Florida. He implemented the CPTED review process for the Tampa Parks Department Greenways and Trails Master Plan. He worked with the Tampa Housing Authority on their Hope VI program and was part of the task force implementing design guidelines.

What is the dress code for the training?
The dress code is business casual. Jeans and flip flops are not permitted.
Will food be available at the training?
Coffee and danishes will be available each morning to help you start your day. For lunch, we provide a 90-minute break, giving you plenty of time to explore local dining options and return to the venue without feeling rushed.
Where should I stay
Yes! The US CPTED Association has secured a special room block at Hotel Haya, our official class hotel and venue.

What airport should I fly into?
We recommend flying into Tampa International Airport (TPA), the closest major airport to the training venue.
For those staying at Hotel Haya, the hotel is located approximately 8 miles from TPA, with a typical travel time of 15 to 20 minutes by car, depending on traffic.
This location is also easily accessible for local attendees commuting from surrounding areas.
What are the expectations for class participation and device use?
CPTED training is designed to be a highly interactive, discussion-based learning experience. Active participation and engagement are essential to fully understand and apply the concepts presented.
To maintain the quality and integrity of the course, participants are expected to:
- Minimize the use of cell phones and other personal devices during instruction
- Step outside the classroom if it is necessary to take calls or respond to urgent matters
- Remain engaged and present during lectures, discussions, and group activities
Excessive device use or lack of engagement may impact the overall learning experience for both the individual participant and the group.
We understand that professional responsibilities may require occasional attention; however, we ask that participants be mindful and respectful of the learning environment.
Instructors reserve the right to address ongoing disruptions to ensure a productive learning environment.
What Time Do the Courses End on The Last Day of Training?
The courses are scheduled until 5:00pm. On the last day of both the Basic & Advanced CPTED courses participants complete an exam and a graded presentation. Remaining for all of the group presentations is a requirement for completing CPTED Training. The presentations include a variety of locations and issues that are presented and discussed as part of the curriculum.
Can I Leave Early on Friday?
No, Friday includes group presentations of the CPTED Field Assessments. Remaining for all the group presentations is a requirement for completing the 40 Hours of Basic CPTED Training. The presentations include a variety of locations and issues that are presented and discussed as part of the curriculum. So please do not ask to have your group present first, so that you can leave early. All certificates will be issued digitally by email.

Can I transfer credits from another CPTED training provider to use toward the NICP CPTED Professional Designation (CPD)?
No. The NICP has established the curriculum and requirements for the CPTED Professional Designation (CPD) based on accepted professional standards for CPTED training. NICP’s courses include graded assignments and proctored exams that must be administered by NICP personnel. The NICP maintains the official records, scores, and a searchable international database of CPD holders. For this reason, training credits from other organizations (including FCPTI and ACPI) cannot be transferred toward NICP certification.
Are NICP and FCPTI certifications interchangeable?
No. The National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP) and the Florida Crime Prevention Training Institute (FCPTI) are separate organizations. While FCPTI uses curriculum originally designed by NICP founder Art Hushen, the State of Florida requires participants to complete both the Basic and Advanced CPTED courses through the same organization to earn certification. Because of this, certificates and credits cannot be transferred between NICP and FCPTI
Can I use my NICP CPTED certification to perform multifamily housing assessments under Florida Statute 768.0706?
No. Florida Statute 768.0706 specifies that CPTED assessments for multifamily housing must be performed by a law enforcement agency or a Florida CPTED Practitioner certified by the Florida Crime Prevention Training Institute (FCPTI). While FCPTI CPTED courses utilize the National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP) curriculum and are taught by NICP instructors, there is no reciprocity between the two training entities based on the statute wording and FCPTI policy.
